Extension of Metro Line 3 to Piraeus

Organization of an educational event for children “METRO green routes”

ELLINIKO METRO S.A. recently completed and handed over to the public the project for the extension of Metro Line 3 to Piraeus, a total investment in the wider Piraeus area of 730 million Euros, which includes 6 new stations, creating an important Transport Centre at Piraeus Station, where two Metro lines (Lines 1 and 3), the Port, the Suburban Railway and the Tramway are operationally combined.

As part of the handover process for use by citizens, ELLINIKO METRO S.A. developed an educational experiential program for primary school children under the title “METRO green routes”, aimed at familiarizing children with pro-environmental means of transport.

Subsequently, the unique educational event “METRO green routes” took place on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in the surroundings of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus. The event, which was held for the second time, was attended by students of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades of the ^38th Primary School of Piraeus, which was founded in the early 1900s and is one of the oldest in the Municipality.

The students, accompanied by their teachers, gathered in the outdoor area of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, where the terminal station of Line 3 of the Metro is located, exhibiting important findings from the largest urban archaeological research ever conducted in the wider area of Piraeus. At the same time a station-museum has been created, with a permanent exhibition dedicated to the water supply system of the ancient city of Piraeus.

The children had the opportunity, through recreational, sporting and experiential activities, to learn about “green” modes of transport and environmental benefits, as well as about the sources of environmental pollution. Among other things, they were invited to solve a “green” Sudoku, participate in team games and build thematic constructions inextricably linked to environmental awareness.

It is noted that ELLINIKO METRO S.A. designed and implemented the original educational program, in cooperation with the Choose – Stratego association of companies and the specialized team for conducting educational programs for schools “Kivotos Children’s Affairs” (www.kivotosevents.gr), to be offered free of charge to pupils of primary schools in Piraeus.

The venue was provided by the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Piraeus.

ELLINIKO METRO S.A., with priority for the implementation of the New Line 4 of the Athens Metro, Section A (Veikou Park – Goudi), continues its construction project, thus contributing to the best possible transport service for citizens.

For this purpose, it maintains its efforts to inform the public about the construction project of the New Line 4, Section A΄ (Veikou Grove – Goudi), by implementing the Educational Program “THE METRO IN GALATSI” in a specially designed room at the Olympic Properties of Galatsi.

The program, under the auspices of the Municipality of Galatsi and ELLINIKO METRO S.A., is addressed to children of primary and kindergarten schools and aims to familiarize the students with the Metro as a means of transport, to highlight the necessity and advantages of this means of transport and to raise children’s awareness on the issue of safety.

Metro is a project characterized by continuous development and progress. It is an example of the implementation of transport projects through long and systematic study, efficiently, comprehensively and for the benefit of all citizens and visitors to our country.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and ELLINIKO METRO S.A. continue their efforts for extensions and new Metro lines, aiming to reach all the densely populated areas of Attica and Thessaloniki, in order to serve an increasing number of residents and visitors.
